Since morning, we have been witnessing cars which gave us the fizz in our stomach. The lunatic Huracan Performante for instance, or even the purist-approved 911 GT3 got us running around in circles flailing our arms about. But neither of them made us drop down to the floor in awe. Until now. Meet the McLaren 720S! Drop dead gorgeous only begins to express what this car looks like. Stuffed with technology inside, McLaren has really gone the extra mile to make sure than their first ever family replacement (650S), is a worthy one.
The 3.8-litre V8 has been replaced with a new 4.0-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 engine which produces, obviously, 720PS of peak power and 770Nm of peak torque. Mated to the 7-speed SSG gearbox, the 720S accelerates to 100 kmph from standstill in under 3 seconds and goes all the way up to a top speed of 341kmph. And to satisfy the South Asian clientele, the 720S does all this while delivering an approx. mileage of 9kmpl.
The McLaren 720S is the second generation of the Super Series lineup in the marque's portfolio. Aerodynamics has remained the key focus while designing this car, which is apparent in the way it looks. The radiators have been removed from the side and instead, the 720S uses the ‘double-skin’ aerodynamic form of the dihedral doors to channel air to the radiators which cool the mid-mounted engine.
Also, to make the car lighter, McLaren has used a carbon fibre chassis - the Monocage II central structure, which has helped them limit the weight to just 1,283kg. A range of aluminium alloys were also used extensively in the chassis as well as for some body panels to keep the 'kgs' in check.
The McLaren 720S also uses the new Proactive Chassis Control from the company which, with the new suspension and the electro-hydraulic steering, makes the car more planted at high speed and corners.
All in all, the 720S looks like nothing else in the supercar market. Just the flowing lines on the beautiful body are enough to make it a worthy adversary to the likes of the Ferrari 488 GTB, and the kit inside the car just makes the deal sweeter. Deliveries will begin from May and prices will be around the £208,600 (approx Rs 1.6 crore without taxes) in the UK, with the car being available in three Performance and Luxury trims.
McLaren, what have you done!
