Along with the Tata Tigor and the RaceMo, Tata Motors also brought the Nexon to the Geneva Motor Show. Now we’ve seen the car before at the 2016 Auto Expo and we approved of the way it looked, but that’s all we knew about Tata’s venture into the sub 4-metre crossover segment. Fast Forward to today, the Nexon Geneva Edition had a lot more to show than just a new colour scheme. And we hope it’s the car that will come to our shores so let’s start with the cabin first.
It features colour coded interiors along with an openable centre console with armrest, multiple utility spaces and laptop and iPad trays. It also features a Climate Control with rear AC vents. The cabin also boasts of a touchscreen infotainment system from Harman which will double up as the rear reversing camera screen as well. It also features smartphone connectivity and according to Tata, ‘next-gen connectivity’ which we think could refer to the Microsoft Azure cloud computing system.
In terms of safety, it will come with dual front airbags, ABS and EBD with corner stability control for a safer drive and ISOFIX rear child seat mounts. In addition, a reversing camera is also a part of the package. It is powered by a new 1.5-litre Revotorq diesel engine, though the performance figures remain elusive, it is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission for better drive-ability and fuel efficiency. It also features three driving modes. It is also fitted with a new advanced dual path suspension for superior ride comfort and Tata also claims that the Nexon also features a class leading NVH package.
At the 2016 Auto Expo no details were divulged. We now know that the Nexon measures 3995mm in length, 1811mm in width and is 1607mm high. The wheelbase stands at 2498mm. Considering the dimensions, the Nexon will go up against the Ford EcoSport, the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza and the soon to be launched Honda WR-V. It is as long as the Brezza but has the shortest wheelbase which could mean lesser space in the cabin. But it is however the widest of all three which should give it a wider track hence better stability.
Aesthetically, the Nexon does surpass its competition . Tata also claims that the cabin has been bestowed with high quality materials and ergonomically placed control surfaces. If the Tiago is a yardstick to go by, it would not be a folly to believe that statement. Also, considering that it will feature an all new engine, a virtual eco system of sorts which is being developed with Microsoft, the Nexon could prove to be a worthy rival in the sub 4-metre crossover segment. The only factor that could work against it is the pricing. But then again, the long list of aforementioned features could help it justify its potentially higher price tag.
