Government Introduces New Parking Policy For Delhi

A lot of people can be seen parking their cars outside their houses along the road in Delhi. This creates a lot of congestion in traffic flow due to unnecessary usage of roads for parking the cars. The Delhi government has come up on a solution for this road blockage and it will now be levying hefty fees for the people who park their cars on the roadside. The ‘Parking Policy For Delhi’ will be charging different sums of money for parking cars at different hours. People will be charged more during the daytime and peak hours compared to night hours. Rates will differ during regular weekdays and during weekends.

This new parking policy was proposed by the AamAadmi Party (AAP) government, and Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal has given a green signal for the implementation of that idea. The policy is open for suggestions and improvements from public and stakeholders for a month’s period. The city has got over 17 million people living, with over one crore vehicles registered. Out of that, over 9.5 lakh vehicles are privately owned vehicles and parked along roadside. It is everyday’s lifecycle for every Delhite to get stuck in traffic over roads in small colonies in which the cars are usually parked randomly.

Commenting on the current parking scenario and traffic congestions, Delhi Police said, “Beyond a specific number, depending on plot size, there should be additional charges for parking on residential streets for equitable distribution of public spaces.” The government is also taking measures to put a brake to the rapidly increasing multiple car buyers by increasing the road tax for people who buys more than one car. The new parking policy will make multi-level parking (MLP) cheaper than surface parking (the situation is reverse currently).

Once suggestions are received from the concerned people, the transport department will review the policy and make changes if required. The final policy will then be sent to the Lieutenant Governor again for his approval, after which an order for the implementation would be issued.
