Harley-Davidson is coming to India and that is written in stone. As the excitement builds up more details are rolling out about the plans that Harley-Davidson has for the Indian market.
The company has already established a subsidiary in Gurgaon, Haryana and has also started the hunt for dealers. The premium bikes will initially be imported along with accessories and riding gear. The thought of setting up shop in India has not been completely ruled out, however the company will first see how the Indian business functions before taking any steps in that direction.
Harley-Davidson Motor Company President and Chief Operating Officer, Matthew Levatich, states, "As India continues to extend its global reach, so does Harley-Davidson." "We believe Harley-Davidson has outstanding opportunities for continued growth around the world."
Harley-Davidson is looking at the long term for India and being a part of the second largest two wheeler market in the world is a significant measure for the company. Despite the mass market still being dominated by inexpensive bikes, the company is bullish about the growth and expects to see leisure biking grow in a substantial manner.
Leading the Harley-Davidson subsidiary in India is Anoop Prakash who will be posted as the Managing Director of this venture. The initial phase of expansion into the market involves locating and finalizing dealers in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Punjab.
The first bikes will only be delivered in 2010, which isn't too far away. Its going to be an exciting year ahead and expect the fireworks to kick off at the Auto Expo in Jan!
