Electric cars are hardly news these days. We've seen them all; brand new all-electric concepts, hybrids and even electric versions of our old favorites. One look at this new GYM Car concept though, and one can instantly tell that this creation of Coventry University design student, Da Feng, is well out of the ordinary. But don't be fooled by its sleek and aerodynamic race car looks, for what lies beneath the lightweight, injection-molded, magnesium alloy chassis and carbon fiber bodywork of this new electric car concept is far from what one would really imagine.
As with any electric car, this single seater runs on a pretty conventional electric motor which gets its power from standard batteries. But what makes this concept unique is that apart from recharging the batteries by plugging it into an electrical outlet, the driver can choose to recharge them by any of the exercise equipment built into the car. Yes... you read it right - exercise equipment.
The sliding seat, pedals and steering wheel can be used as either a stepping machine or a rowing machine, while bench presses or pull-ups can be simulated using the seat and an overhead mounted handle. Even the arm rests are designed to not give your arms any rest if you so choose, as they can be used for curls.
While such a car would not appeal to those amongst us who believe that a car is supposed to relieve them of effort, those who love a good workout would really get some serious kicks from it. And for those of us who are extremely environmentally conscious and believe that normal electric cars too are damaging to the environment can breathe a sigh of relief. For if you are one of those people who believes the power to recharge your electric car's batteries also comes at a cost to the environment, how about trading a few calories for some electrons?
