Hero MotoCorp's entry-level commuter motorcycle, the Splendor iSmart has emerged as the most fuel-efficient motorcycle in the world, a title so far claimed by the recently launched Bajaj Platina ES.
According to the latest (March 2015) fuel efficiency (FE) values certified by the central government's International Centre for Automotive Technology (iCAT), the motorcycle returned 102.5 kilometres to a litre of petrol.
The Hero Splendor iSmart was launched by Hero MotoCorp is powered by a proven 97.2cc single cylinder air-cooled engine which makes 7.8PS of power and 8.04Nm of torque. It's a proven workhorse of an engine and does its job well, or rather, has been doing its job well in several Hero entry level variants, including the Splendor iSmart and Hero's cafe racer, the Splendor Pro Classic.
The Splendor franchise includes other models such as Splendor +, Splendor Pro and Super Splendor (125cc).
We at ZigWheels were impressed with the tech when we reviewed the Splendor iSmart right after its launch last year. And the iSmart even went on to win the coveted 2014 ET ZigWheels Entry Level Bike of the Year as well, primarily due to this start-stop technology, or what Hero calls the i3S tech - for idle start-stop system. The technology no doubt could be a boon for conserving fuel in our bumper-to-bumper traffic conditions.
Now with the record fuel consumption claims, the Splendor iSmart could well help Hero MotoCorp drive sales in a market where weak rural demand has been dragging motorcycle sales.
