At the launch of the new CRF 1100L Africa Twin, Honda showed a very interesting slide which read ‘From CKD to 100 per cent localisation’, indicating its vision to make its two-wheelers even more affordable in a price-conscious market like India.
However, do not expect this to happen overnight. The Japanese manufacturer will first analyse the market for such a move. The first two-wheeler that is likely to get more affordable is the CB300R, (Rs 2.42 lakh) which is expected to get even costlier once the BS6-compliant version rolls in. This move could help Honda gain momentum in the burgeoning 250-300cc segment. It could also lead to Honda’s maxi-scooter, the Forza 300, becoming more affordable as it shares its engine with the baby CB. Sadly, the CBR250R is unlikely to be a part of the plan as it could be discontinued come April 1, when BS6 emission norms are implemented across the country.
What remains to be seen is which motorcycles in Honda India’s big bike lineup will be localised to this extent in the near future. For now, the Japanese manufacturer is expected to bring the Rebel 500, CB500F, CBR500R, and the CB500X, which could also help it expand its range in India. Localising its range of big bikes is no easy task as the manufacturer will have to hunt for the right suppliers capable of providing components that meet the Japanese manufacturer’s strict quality standards. And since that’s bound to take a long time, be prepared for a long wait.
