Honda was the centre of attention at the recently held Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada. The reason behind it was a new self-balancing motorcycle concept. Based on Honda's robotics technology, the ‘Honda Riding Assist’ technology self-balances the motorcycle and also greatly reduces the possibility of falling over while the motorcycle is at rest. This highly commendable innovation has earned Honda three honourable awards, namely – Best of CES 2017 "Best Innovation" and "Best Automotive Technology" awards as judged by Engadget, the official partner of the Best of CES Awards, as well as the Popular Mechanics magazine's Best of CES "Editors' Choice Awards."
The Honda Riding Assist technology does not make use of gyroscopes to self-balance the bike; however, the system adjusts the rack angle of the front forks to change the wheelbase in order to maintain balance. Apart from the longitudinal movement, even the front wheel turns in the opposite direction, similar to how a rider would countersteer to balance the bike at low speeds. As per Honda, the Honda Riding Assist technology was originally developed for the company's UNI-CUB personal mobility device. Now, with Honda Riding Assist, it is a new proposal by the company to make touring and everyday use of motorcycles easier.
