Goodbye Honda Mobilio

Two weeks before Honda launches the Mobilio in India, dealers across the country have started accepting bookings at a token amount of Rs 50,000. Deliveries of the Mobilio will commence once the car is launched on the 23rd of July. The Mobilio hasn’t reached showrooms yet so gathering bookings are dependent on the reviews and promotions created on the seven-seater.
We expect Honda to price the Mobilio very keenly with a starting price of Rs 6 lakh approximately to make inroads in the MPV segment. The Mobilio is built on an extended Brio chassis and shares plenty of parts from the Brio/Amaze parts bin. Moreover, the 1.5-litre i-VTEC petrol and the 1.5-litre i-DTEC diesel engines are sourced from the City as are the gearboxes. These commonalities will definitely help Honda price the Mobilio right.
The Mobilio will be manufactured at Honda’s Greater Noida plant in Uttar Pradesh and not the recently commissioned Tapukara facility in Rajasthan where the Amaze is built. When the Honda City was launched earlier this year, Honda found it tough to cope with the demand and so only diesel variants were initially produced followed by the petrols a month later. This time Honda is gearing up well in advance to start deliveries of all variants and engine options from the onset because the Japanese carmaker is aware that it has a winner on its hands and there’s tremendous positive sentiment built up around the brand.
Honda is well into playing the numbers game now and is within striking distance of becoming India’s third largest carmaker after Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai. The next product adding to the Honda line-up will be the Honda Jazz, that’s likely to join the fleet in the first quarter of 2015.
