With the 2021 PCX 160, Honda also launched the 2021 PCX e:HEV in Japan. The e:HEV is the brand’s first hybrid scooter that was introduced in 2018 and now, like the others from the PCX family, has been overhauled.
The PCX e:HEV is powered by a 124cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine producing 12.5PS and 12Nm. The engine is assisted by an AC motor that puts out 1.9PS and 4.3Nm, bringing the performance figures on par with the PCX 160. The electric motor is aimed to give extra low-end grunt and refinement at low speeds. The scooter also boasts of two riding modes: D and S, with the latter suitable for some spirited riding.
That said, with the battery pack under the seat, the e:HEV has less underseat storage, compared to the 30-litre storage on the gasoline-powered siblings. The fuel tank capacity, however, is unchanged at 8.1 litres.
The PCX e:HEV comes in a white and blue colour scheme to show its environmental-friendly intentions. Though the design is a lot similar to the older model, the styling is a bit sharper now. The scooter gets all the modern features such as keyless ignition, USB Type-C charging port, and LED illumination.
Before you get all starry-eyed, this is not the PCX we could get here next year. In a cost-conscious market like ours, a micro-hybrid system wouldn’t find takers and a full EV would prove to be a better deal. We are hopeful the Japanese brand will grace us with the Forza 350.
