Honda Sensing advanced driver-assistive system revealed

Honda has introduced a new driver assistive system called the Honda Sensing that will be rolled out first in Japan on the all-new Honda Legend. This new driver assistive system is a step towards a collision free society according to the Japanese carmaker. The pursuit of a collision-free society is a part of Honda’s global safety concept, ‘Safety for Everyone.’

It is a system consisting of two types of sensors with different characteristics. One is a millimetre-wave radar located inside the front grille, and the other is a monocular camera mounted on the upper, inside part of the windshield.

The new millimetre-wave radar has expanded its scope of detection to include pedestrians regarded as being hard to detect due to their low rate of radio wave reflection as well as the position and speed of target object. Moreover, the monocular camera identifies attributes and sizes of pedestrians and other target objects which come in range within 60m approximately ahead of the vehicle, achieving recognition with improved accuracy.

The system has five key functions which include: A Collision Mitigation Braking System which delivers an audio and visual warning when there is a risk of a head-on collision. If the driver fails to react, the car will automatically begin braking itself to prevent or reduce the severity of a crash.

A Road Departure Mitigation System which uses the camera to determine when the car strays from its lane. In case, if the car strays, the steering wheel will start vibrating and an audio warning will be activated. If the driver fails to react, the car will attempt to steer itself back into its lane. If the vehicle it straying too far, the car will automatically brake itself to prevent driving off the road.

A Pedestrian Collision Mitigation Steering System makes use of  the radar and camera to detect pedestrians and the ‘boundary line on the side strip of the road.’ When the system detects that the car is swaying towards the side strip and could possibly hit a pedestrian, it will automatically steer itself out of the way to prevent a collision.

A False Start Prevention Function will work at stop lights to determine if the driver hits the accelerator too fast when another car is still ahead of it. In case, if this happens, the car will prevent the acceleration and provide audio and visual warning as well as vibrations on the accelerator pedal.

A Lead Car Departure Notification System, on the other hand, provides an audio and visual notification when the car in front starts up from standstill traffic.

The system also has a variety of other features including Lane Keeping Assist, Traffic Sign Recognition and Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow.
