Honda has showcased quite a few interesting products at the 2017 Tokyo Auto Show, notable among which are the 2018 Gold Wing and the Neo Sports Cafe Concept. Among these high profile unveils, Honda also showcased its PCX scooter in electric and hybrid versions.
Both the electric and hybrid scooters feature the same updated design, but underneath the skin, they are vastly different.
The PCX electric scooter gets a high-performance electric motor developed in-house by Honda using learnings taken from their four-wheeler division. Big news is that the Honda Mobile Power Pack is a detachable unit. In essence, you can attach two of these power packs under the seat of the PCX and vastly improve your range. While not much information is available, Honda plans to standardise this technology across its future electric and hybrid vehicle range.
The PCX Hybrid carries a petrol engine augmented by an electric motor. The drive system requires a new high-charge battery and a starter system. Honda says, the electric assist adds a torquey characteristic to the motor. The entire development of both scooters have been done completely in-house by Honda.
Along with the drivetrains, the scooters have also received minor styling updates to differentiate them from their petrol counterparts. The headlamp is a new, larger unit and the taillamp is a new LED unit. The instrument cluster is a digital LCD affair and in the hybrid version, shows fuel level, battery charge level and gets a charge assist indicator.
Honda plans to launch the PCX in Asian markets in 2018. Considering that our road transport ministry plans to ban fossil-fuel powered cars in the near future, it makes sense for Honda to get the electric and hybrid versions of the PCX or at least the drivetrains here. Expect to get similar technology powered bikes and scooters from Honda in the near future.
