Honda has proudly announced that the humble Super Cub has crossed 100 million units in production this month. This makes the Super Cub the most produced two-wheeler ever. This two-wheeler was the brainchild of company founder Soichiro Honda who wanted a practical, reliable and affordable motorcycle for the masses. The first Super Cub rolled off the production plant in 1958. 50 years later, the Super Cub surpassed the 60 million sales mark in 2008. However, Honda built a staggering 40 million more in the next ten years thereby making the Super Cub the most produced two-wheeler in the world!
To put this in context, back in February 2011, the Guinness Book Of World Records awarded the Toyota Corolla the record for the most produced car in the world with a total of 37 million units sold worldwide. Although the Super Cub has been in production since 1958, it is still a bestseller in various markets.
Call it a stroke of luck or the work of several geniuses, you can't deny the popularity of the Honda Super Cub. A product that has managed to garner love and admiration from both developed and developing countries alike. It was also the first motor vehicle to be granted a 3D trademark to stop other automotive companies from making cheap replicas of the iconic moped.
When the Super Cub made its debut in the late 50s, it was the only motorised vehicle that the common man could afford. It marked itself as a practical, easy to use, easier to maintain, entry-level two-wheeler that could be used for day-to-day activities.
Honda showcased the e-concept of the Super Cub at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show. Along with the 2018 Super Cub, we expect Honda to release the production version of the e-concept during the 45th edition of the show this year. The 2018 models will be based on the 1958 version to mark its 60th anniversary next year. The new bikes will be available in both Classic and Pro versions. The latter will get a loading basket at the front and smaller 14-inch wheels instead of the standard 17-inch ones to increase the size of the luggage rack.
For braking, the bikes employ drum brakes at both ends. The updated versions will come with two engine options - a 50cc motor that produces 3.7PS of power and a 110cc engine that churns out 8PS of power. The 2018 Super Cub will also get new LED headlights and Honda's Programmed Fuel Injection System along with a new muffler with a two-stage catalytic converter to make it pro-environment and emission controlled.
