This is your first look at the Hyundai Casper, the brand’s micro SUV that will slot below the Venue. Set to be launched in Korea first, Hyundai has given us a detailed look of the upcoming SUV’s exterior design. And the first impressions are rather positive.
The Casper’s mix of funky and retro design touches does seem to attract eyeballs. Up front, the gloss black closed-off grille with the ‘H’ logo flanks the DRLs. Depending on the trim (Standard and Active), the lower grille with triangle inserts can be in either a black or silver finish, with the former featuring round elements.
Shifting focus to the side, the fairly upright hood and stance does give the Casper an SUV demeanor. Other highlights include the large 17-inch alloy wheels housed in rectangular wheel arches and roof rails. Also, the rear door handles are hidden behind the window, making the SUV look like a three-door vehicle.
At the rear, the Casper gets retro looking triangle-elements in the LED tail lamps housed in the boot. The indicators and reversing lamp are housed separately in a round housing. Overall, the retro and modern design elements have been infused finely, making this a delight to look at.
Size wise, the Casper measures 3595mm long, 1595mm wide, and 1575mm tall. It sits on a 2400mm wheelbase, which is identical in length to the Santro.
Hyundai is yet to give us a glimpse of the interior, but a closer look at these images reveal a large floating touchscreen infotainment (probably an 8-inch unit). If earlier spy shots are anything to go by, the SUV will feature a black-white upholstery as well. It will also have a single-pane sunroof.
Other notable features should include Blue Link connected car tech, automatic climate control, a semi-digital instrument cluster, steering-mounted audio controls, and keyless entry with push button start. Safety features include multiple airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors and a rear view camera.
Under the hood, the Korea-spec Casper will come with two naturally aspirated 1-litre petrol engines: a 76PS naturally aspirated and 100PS turbo-petrol engine. Both units are paired to a 4-speed automatic transmission. In India, the SUV could come with the Grand i10 Nios’s 83PS 1.2-litre petrol, 75PS 1.2-litre diesel, and 100PS 1-litre turbo-petrol options.
Early bird reservations for the Casper have begun in Korea ahead of its debut soon. The SUV could come to India as Hyundai’s most affordable SUV in 2022. With an expected starting price of around Rs 6 lakh (ex-showroom), the Casper would rival the Tata Punch, Maruti Suzuki Ignis, and Mahindra KUV100 NXT.
