The facelifted Hyundai Elantra is being offered only with a BS6-compliant 2.0-litre petrol engine since its official launch. This move by Hyundai could’ve put certain dieselheads down as the Elantra was a petrol-only model. But a RTO document has revealed the specifications for the Elantra diesel, giving us a hint that it could be launched in the near future.
The Elantra diesel will be offered in three variants: S, SX and SX (O). It’ll utilise the same BS6-compliant 1.5-litre CRDI diesel engine found under the hoods of the Kia Seltos and 2020 Hyundai Creta. It develops 115PS of power and 250Nm of torque. Just like the Seltos and Creta, we expect this engine to be paired with a 6-speed manual and 6-speed torque converter.
The 1.5-litre CRDI engine is not as powerful as the older 1.6-litre diesel engine which developed 128PS and 260Nm. Here’s a detailed comparison:

Currently, the Elantra is offered with a BS6-compliant 2.0-litre petrol engine that develops 152PS of power and 192Nm of torque. It’s offered with a 6-speed manual transmission and torque converter.

We expect prices for the Elantra to be around Rs 1 lakh more than Elantra petrol, which starts from Rs 15.89 lakh (ex-showroom). The Hyundai Elantra diesel will lock horns with the Honda Civic and the Toyota Corolla Altis.
