Hyundai’s top selling hatchback, the i20, is now getting equipped with dual airbags for the entire range of Elite and Active models. After Maruti Suzuki and Ford, Hyundai has also followed suit to provide better occupant safety in their cars. Ford had made the initiative of providing ABS and dual front airbags standard on all variants with the Figo hatchback and Figo Aspire compact sedan. The same additional features were provided by Maruti Suzuki later in all variants of the Celerio, WagonR, Swift, and Swift Dzire.
Hyundai has introduced these standardised features late in the models for the i20 range, despite being known for selling feature-loaded cars as compared to its rivals in the market. Carmakers like Toyota and Volkswagen had already incorporated the safety features in its entry level vehicles.
With the addition of dual airbags, one can expect a price hike of approximately Rs 15-20 thousand across all variants of the i20. In the Indian market, the Elite i20 had recently achieved record sales of 1.5 lakh units since its launch in 2014. The Hyundai i20 has been a strong contender amongst its rivals and it still is. On a competition check, Honda Jazz is the only vehicle in its segment to be left out without dual airbags for all variants as a standard feature.
