According to a report Hyundai Motor India, India’s second-largest car maker, is now planning to build a new plant in India and is currently in talks with different state governments for the same.
The same report also suggests that Hyundai will share this plant with its global subsidiary, Kia Motors which is most likely to enter the Indian domestic market by 2020.
Hyundai had not officially confirmed the possibility of a new plant being set up or the prospect of Kia operating in the Indian domestic market.
Hyundai has stated in reply to a query by Financial Express, “We would like to affirm that Hyundai Motor India has two manufacturing plants in Chennai with a capacity of 7 lakh cars per annum. At the moment, we have no plan to start a new manufacturing facility”.
Hyundai’s entire portfolio is manufactured at the same plant, including the hot-selling Hyundai Creta, Elantra, 4S Verna, i10, Grand i10, i20 Elite, i20 Active, Xcent and the Eon.
Hyundai has been doing well in the Indian market and their domestic sales in the month of April grew by 9.7% (sold 42,351 units) in comparison to April 2015. Even the products from Hyundai destined for export markets are produced at the Chennai plant and with increasing demand, the addition of another production facility in the near future seems quite likely.
Hyundai also organized a ‘Mega Experience Customer Programme’ recently. Read more about it here.
