Although the period of affected cars isn’t that long, Hyundai says that 7,657 cars were produced during the month of January in 2015 and all will be called in for inspection. The car firm said that the recall will be done in different phases and the fix, if required, will be carried out free of cost for all customers. Hyundai will contact all the customers owning the Eon hatchback from the affected lot and take a suitable time for the inspection process.
This recall, although voluntary, doesn’t serve well to the little hatchback’s career in India. The Eon has never been the first choice for customers in the entry-level hatchback segment. It locks horns with the best selling car in India, the Maruti Suzuki Alto and just like the Eon, the Alto is also available in two avatars with a 0.8-litre engine and a 1.0-litre engine. With new players like Renault and Datsun clocking up good numbers for the Kwid and redi-GO respectively, Hyundai’s Eon is slowly becoming a redundant product for the Indian market.
It has been a worrisome couple of months for the auto industry in India. In the past two months, the automotive industry has witnessed voluntary recalls from Mahindra for its NuvoSport, Scorpio and Rexton SUVs, from Skoda for its Octavia and Superb sedans and from Chevrolet for its D-segment sedan Cruze.
