Hyundai India has discontinued the Eon as it fails to meet upcoming safety norms
  • Eon will be replaced by the new Santro as the brand’s entry-level model.
  • Eon lacks ABS, driver airbag and rear parking sensors that are required to pass upcoming safety regulations in India.
  • The car was offered with a choice of two petrol engines.
  • Sales have been sluggish since the introduction of the Santro.

Hyundai first debuted the Eon in India on October 2011 to take on the home brewed Maruti Suzuki Alto. Even though it couldn't match the latter’s sales numbers, it did put up a good fight. However, the Eon’s fate was sealed ever since the all-new Santro was launched in India. Since December 2018, no units of Eon have been sold. The last recorded sale was of a single unit in the month of November 2018. Hyundai was selling around 4,000 units of Eon every month, which dropped to just six units after the introduction of the Santro.

Now, Hyundai India has discontinued the Eon and has silently pulled it from their official website. Failing sales coupled with a lack of standard safety kit on offer seem to be the primary reasons for the small hatchback getting the boot. Earlier, the government had announced that from April 1, all new cars sold in India must have ABS, driver airbags, and rear parking sensors as standard across all variants. The Eon lacks in that front as it misses out on ABS, driver airbags, rear parking sensors, speed limiter and seatbelt reminder as standard equipment.

The Eon was available with a 0.8-litre unit that made 56PS of max power and 74.5Nm of peak torque and a 1.0-litre unit with 69PS of max power and 91Nm of torque. Both engines were paired with a 5-speed manual transmission.

It’s been eight long years since its inception and there is no news of a replacement for the Eon as of now. The recently revamped Santro will be the smallest offering from the brand for the time being.
