Hyundai has quietly launched a new base-spec ‘Era Executive’ variant for its entry-level model, the Santro. Replacing the Dlite and Era variants, the revised variant lineup of the Santro is: Era Executive, Magna, Sportz and Asta.

Priced at Rs 4.15 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), the new base-spec variant pushes the starting price of the Santro up by Rs 25,000. Apart from the introduction of the new variant, Hyundai has also added features to the mid-spec Magna and Sportz variants at no additional cost.
Have a look at where the Era Executive variant sits in the Santro lineup:

The Era Executive variant gets additional features like body-coloured bumpers and door handles and manual HVAC, which were not available in the Dlite variant. But it misses out on features which were present in the Era variant, including essentials like a front charging point and rear AC vents.

Talking about safety features, the Era Executive variant gets a driver’s side airbag and ABS with EBD. But it misses out on rear parking sensors which is mandatory on all new cars post the implementation of AIS 145 Safety Norms on July 01.
Hyundai has also added additional features to the mid-spec Magna and Sportz variants. The Magna trim level now gets a 2-DIN audio system and steering-mounted controls, features that were limited to its AMT equipped variant before. The Sportz AMT variant on the other hand gains additional safety features from the top-spec Asta variant like a rear parking camera, passenger side airbag and front seatbelt pretensioners and load limiters.
The Santro is powered by a 1.1-litre engine that puts out 69PS and 99Nm of torque in its petrol variant. If you opt for the CNG variant these figures go down by 10PS and 15Nm. While the petrol-powered car can be had with a 5-speed manual and AMT transmission options, the CNG powered variants can be had with the manual only.

While the introduction of the Era Executive variant in the Santro is indeed a welcome addition, the fact that it now costs Rs 25,000 more than before is a bit of a bummer. To its credit though, the introduction of additional features makes it better equipped to take on its main rivals like the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R and the Tata Tiago now.
