2018 Hyundai Santro: 5 First Impressions

Hyundai’s Santro has officially made a comeback. The little hatchback has been wowing us with its ease of use, frugality and practicality over the years. This time around, Hyundai seems to have upped the ante with what’s on offer. But before we get to that, here’s a quick look at the prices:

For its next innings, the Santro has definitely come in well prepared. In terms of the way it looks, it’s unmistakably Hyundai. Built on the K1 platform, the new Santro uses 63 per cent of high strength and advanced high strength steel for enhanced structural rigidity and safety. You might see traces of the old i10 here and there, but every single panel on the car is brand new. It retains its ‘tallboy’ identity and stands quite tall. The new Santro is now available in seven colour options, including two new colours: Imperial Beige and Diana Green.

What’s more, it’s packing in a bucketload of features too. For instance, the top-spec Asta variant gets features such as a touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, a reverse camera, rear AC vents as well as steering-mounted audio controls. On the safety front, anti-lock brakes and a single driver airbag is standard across the range. It’s only the range-topping Asta variant that gets a passenger airbag.
Features aside, the cabin genuinely is a happy place to be in. The fit and finish, and quality of materials used is something we’ve seen in cars a category above. There’s some interesting detailing here too, including tri-star detailing on the AC vents, and also a centre console that mimics the shape of an elephant’s head.

And Hyundai seems to have really thought about most things. There’s a depression on the top of the dashboard - for you to dock your beloved idols and pictures. Thoughtful!
For the Santro, Hyundai has brought its 1.1-litre Epsilon engine back from the dead. Unlike its rivals that feature a 3-cylinder motor, the Santro gets a 4-cylinder unit. You get to choose between petrol and CNG-powered Santros, and Hyundai is offering a 5-speed AMT as well.

Sadly, a CNG-AMT combo is not available straight out of the factory. As far as the numbers are concerned, the Santro’s engine makes 69PS/99Nm with petrol power and 59PS/84Nm with CNG. Fuel efficiency is rated at 20.3kmpl for the petrol and 30.48km/kg for the CNG versions.
After-sales support continues to be strong with the Santro and Hyundai is offering a standard warranty of 3-year/100,000 km along with 3 Years Road-Side Assistance.
