While the day’s hot trend is undoubtedly battery-operated electric vehicles, Hyundai is also looking at hydrogen as an alternative fuel. IThe company has teased a new sports car - which will run on hydrogen -- scheduled for a September 7 debut this year. Currently, the Nexo is Hyundai’s only fuel cell EV.
The teaser video shows the sports car heavily camouflaged drifting around a track, which may just be hinting at a possible rear-wheel or an all-wheel drivetrain with a ’Drift’ mode. The model seems production-ready, with a closed body style (fastback), a small rear spoiler, and sporty-looking alloy wheels.
We have yet to know the powertrain specifications, but we reckon it’ll be considerably punchier than the Nexo. For reference, the fuel cell electric SUV gets a 161PS electric motor that, instead of a large battery pack, draws power from a fuel cell backed by a 156.6-litre hydrogen tank. It’s capable of going 611km on a full tank, according to European WLTP standards.
We expect all the details to be out on September 7. The upcoming car could be a sportier alternative to the Toyota Mirai FCEV. Importantly, this could be one of the first hydrogen-powered sports cars for enthusiasts.
