Hyundai will only offer the 1.2-litre and 1.5-litre diesel engines once BS6 emission norms are implemented in the country next year
  • Currently, more than half of Hyundai models in India come with the 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre CRDi diesel engine
  • The 1.6-litre will most likely be replaced with the 1.5-litre unit that is set to make its debut with the Kia Seltos.
  • The Verna and Elantra are all set to receive updates in the coming days.
  • The Venue’s 1.4-litre model will soon be replaced by the Seltos’ 1.5-litre unit.
  • The Hyundai Tucson with its 2.0-litre diesel will also soldier on.

Hyundai India has been hogging the limelight since the last few months thanks to the launch of the Venue, Kona Electric and now the Grand i10 Nios. Now, we have got to know that the Korean manufacturer is planning a major rejig in its diesel engine lineup and will discontinue the 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre diesel engines in India once the more stringent BS6 emission norms come into place in April next year.

From what we know, more than half of the Hyundai models sold in India come with either the 1.4-litre or 1.6-litre CRDi engines. Post the implementation of new emission norms, Hyundai will only offer the 1.2-litre diesel engine and the new 1.5-litre unit that is set to make its debut with the Kia Seltos later this week. Hyundai has cited the high costs of upgrading diesel motors to meet the more stringent BS6 norms as the reason behind the decision. Not only will Hyundai save a big chunk of development costs by using Kia’s 1.5-litre motor, it will also benefit from lower taxes and duties as diesel engines with capacities of under 1500cc fall under a lower tax structure in India.

Here is a list of cars which utilise the 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre diesel engines:

Model Engine
Elite i20 1.4-litre CRDI
i20 Active 1.4-litre CRDI
Verna
1.4-litre CRDI/1.6-litre CRDI
Venue 1.4-litre CRDI
Creta
1.4-litre CRDI/1.6-litre CRDI
Elantra 1.6-litre CRDI

The Elantra and Verna are expected to get a facelift soon. Expect these updated version to come equipped with the new 1.5-litre diesel engine. The Venue, on the other hand, will also make the switch to the 1.5-litre unit soon. But then, it will also likely come at a price thereby decreasing its affordability quotient. Also note that Hyundai might use a fixed geometry turbocharger for the 1.5-litre diesel and offer it in a lower state of tune in the Venue and the upcoming next-gen i20. Hyundai’s flagship SUV, the Tuscon, on the other hand will continue to use the 2.0-litre diesel engine as it  is already Euro 6 compliant.

The 1.2-litre diesel will be upgraded as the hatchbacks and compact sedans from the Korean carmaker’s lineup, including the Grand i10 Nios make use of this unit. The next-gen Elite i20 is also on its way and will borrow the 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine from the Venue as well as the Seltos’ 1.5-litre diesel unit.
