Three new models are slated for launch in early 2020
  • The new Hyundai Creta and Verna will borrow from the China-spec ix25 and Verna.
  • The Tucson will get a facelift and BS6 engines.
  • All three models are likely to be launched by mid-2020.

Hyundai Motor India has told us its plans for Auto Expo 2020. The carmaker will debut the new Creta SUV, facelifted Verna sedan, and its India-flagship Tucson SUV. All three are expected to come with all-new looks and a range of BS6 petrol and diesel engines. Hyundai is likely to launch the models successively by mid-2020. Since the Tucson has been delayed by a few months, it could be launched before the Verna and Creta in 2020.

The 2020 Creta is based on an all-new platform. Read our story about it here. Its interior is new as well and features a portrait-style centre touchscreen. We expect the new Creta to get a host of new features like a sunroof and connected car tech. Since it is based on the same platform as the Kia Seltos, it is also likely to borrow its BS6 engines from the Kia. At the least, we expect the new Creta to offer 1.5-litre petrol and diesel engines from the Seltos. Hyundai may also offer the Seltos’ 1.4-litre turbocharged engine.

The new Verna will also feature a more rounded design. While the rear end on the China-spec model is polarizing, the rest of the Verna’s aesthetic is pleasant and coherent. Read our story about the Verna’s recent China debut here. Like the Creta, the sedan is also expected to come with a thorough interior facelift and a larger touchscreen infotainment system. The Maruti Suzuki Ciaz rival is likely to feature connected car tech as well. Once launched, it will go up against the Toyota Yaris and the upcoming Honda City.

We had expected the facelifted Tucson to arrive by the end of this year. Hyundai is likely to keep sheet metal changes to a minimum. However, new headlamps, taillamps, and bumpers will give the SUV an even more modern appearance. Other than a new 8-inch touchscreen, we expect the Tucson to retain its interior design. However, new features like connected car tech and a Krell sound system will make the Tucson an even more lucrative SUV. Hyundai may also offer a 48-volt hybrid system with the new car.

As we have seen from the success of the Venue compact SUV, new Hyundais often get a healthy response after launch. Fans of the Korean carmaker have been eagerly awaiting the Creta, Verna, and Tucson. The deadline for BS6 is likely to be the last straw for the current-gen Verna, Creta, and Tucson. Hence, Hyundai could possibly launch the new models in quick succession following their unveiling. The 2020 Hyundai i20 is also scheduled for launch next year. You can read our story about it here.
