On December 18, the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) released the Hyundai Venue’s crash test results. It awarded the compact sport utility vehicle (SUV) 4 out of 5 stars. The tested model was equipped with front, side, and curtain airbags as well as various active safety features. It scored 91 per cent for adult occupant protection and 81 per cent for child occupant protection.
ANCAP gave the Venue 62 per cent in the Vulnerable Road User Category. This includes head, upper leg, and lower leg impact tests. The Venue scored 4.2/6 in the pedestrian detection test but 0 in the cyclist detection test.
Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) and Lane Departure Warning (LDW) helped the Venue get 2.5/4 in the Lane Support System test. The auto emergency braking system test (interurban) test yielded 1.83/3 for the Venue.
The Venue scored full marks in the side impact test for both adult and child occupants, its two highest scores among all categories. Such marks would not have been possible without side and curtain airbags. While these are standard on the Australia-spec tested model, they are only available on the top-spec SX(O) trim in India.
ANCAP Chief Executive James Goodwin said, “The Venue fell shy of the 5-star safety standard we’ve come to expect from Hyundai with marginal performance levels observed for its ability to avoid a rear-end impact with vehicles in front. This limited the Venue’s Safety Assist score to 62%.” He also said that the Venue was the first car to undergo Safety Assist testing at ANCAP’s New South Wales facility in Australia.
Occupant safety is one of the paramount concerns of carmakers around the world. Even so, the onus of enforcing progressively stricter norms is on the government. Testing facilities such as NCAP provide government organisations as well as carmakers the data they need to make cars safer. The Hyundai Venue’s test emphasises the importance of active safety systems and side and curtain airbags. The high cost of these systems and lack of government mandate has made them less common in mainstream cars. We hope future editions of vehicle safety norms will include these features.
