Mature styling, new features, good pricing and the news of imminent increase in tax for bigger cars seem to have worked in its favour so far
Hyundai Verna

A little over a week of Hyundai launching the new Verna, the sedate styling of the sedan has found many fans. The carmaker has reported that since dealerships started accepting bookings for the new Verna, more than 7,000 units have been spoken for. During the same period, the manufacturer also received well over 70,000 queries for the sedan.

There are still 3,000 Vernas up for grabs if you want one before Diwali as the company aims to deliver 10,000 units before October 19. That puts the production number to around 5,000 units per month, which is good, but not enough to claim the top spot. If the Verna wants to become the king of the C-segment sedan segment once again, then it'll have to keep bouncing off the 6,000 units mark every month.

The Verna starts at a price of Rs 8.0 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) for the E trim with a petrol powertrain and tops out at Rs 12.62 lakh for the diesel engine with the automatic transmission in the SX+ variant.  A 6-speed torque converter automatic has replaced the 4-speed units, and it's available with both the powertrains. For now, there are only 1.6-litre petrol and diesel engines on offer, but the carmaker can install the smaller 1.4-litre engines with minimal turnaround time.

Cars that are longer than four metres and with an engine displacing more than 1.5-litre fall under the big car category, which is about to get a tax hike of 10 per cent bringing the total cess to 25 per cent. That's in addition to the highest GST slab of 28 per cent applicable for all petrol and diesel cars. A higher tax will make it pricier than the Honda City and the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, which will retain their mid-size car status thanks to their engines being smaller than 1.5-litres and enjoy a lower tax bracket. Hyundai is ready to bring the smaller engines that were previously available with the Verna to counter such a move.
