Singapore: Malaysian youngster Afiq Ikhwan made it six out six winning the 12th round as the JK Racing Asia series set the rubber burning on the Marian Bay street circuit hours before the start of the F1 night race here on Sunday.
It was another commanding performance from the Meritus GP driver which helped him to further narrow the gap with championship leader Lucas Auer. For the Austrian it was a heartbreaking weekend as he failed to finish on the podium for the first time. After damaging the nose of the car and front wing in the very first corner, Auer was called in by the stewards midway into the race to repair the damage and went to back of the grid. The youngster still drove his heart out and produced the fastest lap of the race but still managed only the ninth place.
Ikhwan’s compatriot Nabil Jeffri, who finished third on Saturday, went one place higher on the podium. Completing the top-3 was Australian Duvashen Padayachee who’s now looking forward to race in the land his forefathers who migrated from Kerala.
Ikhwan, however, was not all pleased with the race which again saw the safety car in following multiple crashes. “It was a clean race for me but I was not pleased with the race as the safety cars came out again,” he said.
