After releasing a teaser image and video last week, Renault has now taken the wraps off the Kaptur crossover in Moscow yesterday. One of ten new models from Renault to be unveiled globally this year, the Kaptur will go on sale in the summer of 2016 in Russia, before it making its way to other emerging markets like Brazil and India.
Significantly longer and wider than the Captur with a ‘C’ that’s sold in the rest of the world, the Kaptur, contrary to some speculations, is also a a 5 seater crossover based on the Duster platform. In terms of numbers, the Kaptur is 4,333 mm long, 1,813 mm wide, 1,613 mm tall and has a wheelbase of 2,674 mm. The boot volume of 387 litres can be increased to 1,200 litres by fully folding the rear seats.
Moreover, the Kaptur is an all-terrain 4×4 crossover, unlike the Captur that is front-wheel drive. With approach and departure angles of 20 and 31 degrees, the Kaptur also has a high ground clearance of 204 mm.
Style-wide, the Kaptur is pretty identical to the Captur, with minor changes like a redesigned bumper and daytime-running lights. At the rear, the tailgate has been reworked with bumper and skid plates.
Inside, the Russian Kaptur comes fitted with keyless entry, keyless go and locking for all versions, heated front seats, heated windscreen, radio and Bluetooth, but instead of the R-Link infotainment, it will use the Media Nav, with a 7-inch touchscreen.
Apart from the confirmation of all-wheel drive, other powertrain details of the Russia-spec Renault Kaptur have not been revealed yet. But it is speculated that the latest 1.6 petrol unit that Nissan developed and can also be found on the Duster, will make its way into the Kaptur. The 1.2 TCe and 1.5 dCi diesel are also great options.
The Kaptur will be manufactured at Renault’s Moscow plant and will go on sale in Russia starting from this summer. Expect an Indian launch towards the end of 2017.
