Anyone who’s left their bike parked unsheltered on an Indian summer afternoon can attest to the baptism of fire they encounter when they have to saddle up again. Burned bottoms may soon be a thing of the past for Indian Motorcycle owners, though, because the brand has just debuted a revolutionary heated and cooled seat.
Called the ClimaCommand Classic Seat, it uses a thermoelectric module combined with a graphene structure to heat and cool the rider and pillion’s backsides on command (each one can be controlled individually). Heated seats are a bit of a rarity in the OEM world, and cooled seats are pretty much non-existent, so we’re happy to see a manufacturer finally taking an initiative in this field.
Unlike other units that blow hot or cold air through tiny perforations in the seat, Indian’s design changes the temperature of the seat itself, making for a more efficient heat transfer channel. The thermoelectric module is used to pass electricity through the graphene, causing one side of the material to dissipate heat and the opposite side to absorb it.
By reversing the direction of electrical flow, the hot and cold sides can be inverted, allowing both heating and cooling functions using the same hardware. We’re looking forward to sampling the seat in action and checking out how well it works. For now, it appears to be available only in the US as an accessory for the Chief, Chieftain, and Roadmaster models at an eye-watering price of $1,200 (Rs 90,800).
