But things seem to be changing for the better with the latest news doing the rounds. We have received information that three new racetracks will be built in the country. The tracks will reportedly be built in Hosur (Tamil Nadu), Hyderabad and somewhere between Mumbai and Pune. Akbar Ebrahim, the President of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI), spoke to journalists about how the discussions are currently on with interested parties for the project. However, he refused to divulge any more details on them.
The official announcement will be made by the parties themselves when they officially start working on the project, says Ebrahim.
Further clarifying on the nature of the investment, he said that these are not government organisations that are interested but private corporates.
He went on to explain that the nature or the level of the tracks is also relatively unknown for now, and depends on the amount of investment they get and the conditions that the investors chart out. An international racetrack, for example, needs more advanced infrastructure and hence will require heavier investment too.
Elaborating on the role of FMSCI, Ebrahim said, "The FMSCI will support them with whatever they ask for in terms of homologation and specifications etc., what level of circuit they would like to build, whether it is Grade 4, 3 or 2. There are different specifications that FMSCI will provide them."
Once the project is underway, it will join the tiny league of racetracks in the country, namely the Buddh International Circuit in Greater Noida (Delhi), the Madras Motor Race Track in Sriperumbudur (Tamil Nadu), and the Kari Motor Speedway in Coimbatore (Tamil Nadu).
With better and more accessible infrastructure, motorsports will rope in more audience and participants as a lot of them are limited by the lack of access to racetracks.
The news may not be official yet, but let's all collectively keep our fingers crossed for an announcement in the upcoming weeks.
