After suffering a decline in sales due to the demonetization drive by the Indian government for quite some time, major two-wheeler manufacturers in India are now coming back on track. Players like Hero MotoCorp, Bajaj Auto and TVS Motor Company are steadily inching towards positive sales growth. On the other hand, some of the manufacturers got the benefit of increased market share despite a fall in the overall sales of the market during the demonetization. Here we are with the figures of February 2017, which we will compare with those of the corresponding month of the last year to get a better idea of the market situation.
Royal Enfield: After being acquired by the Indian auto major, Eicher Motors, Royal Enfield has shown phenomenal growth in the market. The company is continuously growing in terms of numbers as well as its following in the country. Today, it occupies 80 per cent of the premium motorcycle (between Rs 1-3 lakh price range) market in the country.
Royal Enfield sold 58,439 motorcycles in February 2016, registering a growth of 19 per cent as compared to the 49,156 bikes sold in the same month last year. With a major share coming from the domestic market, the company has also registered growth in exports. Another big achievement of the company is that its popular Classic 350 model was among the top 5 selling motorcycles in January 2017.
Yamaha: Continuing with its upward growth in the sales, India Yamaha Motor has registered a growth of 20 per cent in domestic sales. The company clocked domestic sales of 68,095 units (including Nepal) in February 2017, compared to 56,960 units (including Nepal) in the same month of 2016.
In January 2017, Yamaha launched its all-new 250cc streetfighter, the FZ25 in India at Rs.1,19,500 (ex-showroom, Delhi). The bike is now available at its dealerships across the country and it will further boost its share in the premium segment.
TVS Motor Company: While the Chennai-based two-wheeler manufacturer has registered growth in both the scooter and moped segments, it is still struggling to improve its sales in the motorcycle market after the demonetization.
Total sales of TVS two-wheelers was 2,06,247 units in February 2017 as against 2,11,148 units in February 2016. That means the company recorded a sales decline of 2.3 per cent despite its Jupiter being the second bestselling scooter in the market after the Honda Activa 3G.
Bajaj Auto: Bajaj has also registered a fall of 6 per cent in the domestic market, selling 1,42,287 motorcycles in February 2017 against the 1,51,141 in the corresponding month of last year.
However, the export figures saved it from a negative result by recording a phenomenal growth of 22 per cent. It made the company show an overall hike of 4 percent by delivering a total of 2,44,958 bikes against 2,35,282 units sold during the same month in 2016.
Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India: Despite registering lower sales figures for a couple of months, HMSI benefitted the most from the demonetization. The company is continuously registering a growth in its market share. Domestic growth of the company stood at 5 per cent from 3,51,401 units in Febuary ‘16 to 3,69,865 units in February ‘17. Moreover, HMSI enjoys a 13 percent overall growth which is more than 2.5 times the industry growth.
Honda is already leading the scooter segment with its Activa being the bestselling product for over a decade now. Now, the company has also restarted growing in the motorcycle segment as well. The Honda Shine has re-entered the top 5 selling motorcycles of the country, while its rival Hero Glamour has registered a noticeable fall in sales.
Hero MotoCorp: Despite a continuous fall in sales, Hero MotoCorp is still the leading two-wheeler manufacturer in India and the world’s largest two-wheeler manufacturer. While the rivals are trying their best to defeat HMCL in the market, we all know that it's very difficult to match the network and image of reliability that customers have in Hero.
In the month of February 2017, HMCL reported sales of 5,24,766 units of two-wheelers. The company registered a drop of 4.76 per cent against the 5,50,992 units sold in the corresponding month last year.
