Part of the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), Jeep recently entered India with two of its most famous car marques - the Wrangler and the Grand Cherokee. With the least expensive offering, Wrangler Unlimited, priced at Rs 71.59 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi), Jeep landed itself right in the mix of European carmakers like Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Audi. Subsequently, Jeep announced that it will make more affordable cars for India in the coming months.

We didn’t have to wait for long, as earlier today, in celebration of the start of production at FCA’s Jeep assembly plant in Goiana, Pernambuco, Brazil, Jeep introduced the all-new Compass SUV. The company has tagged it as a global SUV as it will be produced with 17 fuel-efficient powertrain options for customers in more than 100 countries worldwide.

The Compass SUV will be manufactured at FCA’s Ranjangaon facility, located close to Pune, and will be rolled out in India in 2017. While the company hasn’t released many images of the compact SUV, it says that more information will become available at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show which is scheduled for November.

For the Indian market, FCA might equip the Compass with a 2.0-litre Multijet II diesel engine and tune it differently from other markets by ditching outright power in favour of better fuel-economy. In India, prices are expected to hover around the Rs 20 lakh mark. While the Compass SUV may take up a 5-seater role in several markets around the world, Jeep might carve out a third row of seats to accommodate seven in India.
