  • The Jeep Compass-based 7-seater SUV to be called Commander in Brazil.
  • India-spec model likely to have a different name.
  • The exterior design is similar to the Grand Cherokee.
  • Likely to get diesel and turbo-petrol engines.
  • Will be launched in India in 2022.

Jeep has confirmed its 7-seater SUV will be called the Commander. A 20-second teaser gives a sneak peek at its styling.

But before we delve deeper, let’s clear the air. The SUV might not be called ‘Commander’ in India, considering the nameplate was trademarked by Mahindra way back in 1991. It is still valid and can be used till 2025.

On the outside, the familiar seven-slat grille with its chrome-studded elements and the sleek LED headlamps and tail lamp seem to be inspired by the India-bound 2022 Grand Cherokee.

We expect the upcoming SUV to feature a touchscreen infotainment system with connected car tech, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, a wireless phone charger, powered front seats, and a digital driver’s display. Passenger safety should be taken care of by multiple airbags, ABS with EBD, front and rear parking sensors, a 360-degree camera, and electronic stability control.

Under the hood, the Commander will likely utilise a 2.0-litre diesel engine paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. The petrol variant could utilise the 268PS 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine from the Wrangler. Also, the SUV should come with an optional all-wheel drivetrain.
