Well, it’s a Koenigsegg and it doesn't get any more real than this. To put things into perspective, what we have here is the Gemera, a 4-seater GT that produces an otherworldly 1724PS from a three-cylinder internal combustion engine, a couple of electric motors and a wisp of chemical X. Christian Von Koenigsegg believes ultimate performance is reserved to 2-seaters and hence decided to create this. But from the looks of it, it seems like the chemical X part got out of hand, again.
The Tiny Friendly Giant. No, this is not the name of a new animated series but this is what Koenigsegg calls its new powertrain. However, in extreme contradiction to the name, the combined output is rated at 1724PS, of which 1115PS comes from three electric motors. No so tiny or friendly anymore, right? Two electric motors are mounted at the rear wheels while the last one is situated in the crankshaft of the engine.
That engine is where things get even goofier. You see, it’s just a 2.0-litre three-cylinder petrol engine. Yeah, the Mahindra Scorpio’s is bigger. But this dry sump, twin-turbo Freevalve engine defies the phrase ‘There is no replacement for displacement’ by producing 609PS and 600Nm of twist, taking the whole output to 1724PS!
All these comical names and huge numbers result in a 0-100kmph sprint time of 1.9 seconds followed by a top-speed of 400kmph! Furthermore, the engine can run on various fuel options such as ethanol, CO2 neutral methanol and normal fuel. Thanks to the electric motors, the Gemera can even silently sprint to 300kmph while also providing an all-electric range of 50km. Sounds like we’ve arrived in the future.
Power is useless if there’s no dynamics to back it up. Koenigsegg has taken care of that with four-wheel steering and all-wheel torque vectoring. The swedes even say it is “one of the most fun and safe cars on the planet.” The latter trait is supported by a carbon fibre monocoque , six airbags, stability control, traction control, and ADAS 2.5 safety assist.
Koenigsegg also claims a dry weight of 1715kg with a wheelbase of 3000mm. This wheelbase helps in opening up space inside the cabin which also features amenities like 4 cold and warm cup holders, 11-speaker audio system, onboard WiFi, heated and powered front seats and wireless charging.
Of course, the Gemera is limited to 300 units, with the price tag yet to be revealed. With innovations and breakthrough engineering like this, what Koenigsegg has created is a 4-seater mega GT with a boot that is not just fast but one of the fastest cars on earth.
Since we’ve come down to the topic of the fastest car, there’s a new Jesko called Jesko Absolut. In a nutshell, Koenigsegg wants to put an end to the top-speed dogfight with the1600PS Absolut. It hasn't revealed the target figure yet, but Koenigsegg says it’ll be so fast that the Swedish carmaker will exit from this race once and for all. Will it be the first car to break the 500kmph barrier? Only time will tell.
