Ford India has been exporting Ford EcoSport compact SUVs produced at its Chennai plant to several of its international markets. Its Australian arm has now recalled 2,804 units of India-made Ford EcoSport to fix a potential problem with the wiring harness connecting the curtain airbags, seatbelt pretensioner and side impact sensor.
Currently Ford has recalled EcoSports produced between June 15, 2013 and August 26, 2014, sighting some issue where the side airbags may not deploy properly in an event of a collision. However, Ford has clarified that this problem is not related to the Takata recall which has seen manufacturers recall close to 8 million vehicles collectively, across the globe.
The other issue noticed on India-made Ford EcoSport sold in Australia is with its 6-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission which sometimes tends to shudder. This could be due to gearbox fluid contamination due to leaking transmission seals.
Some of the top-end variants of the Ford EcoSport sold in India are also equipped with curtain airbags and the 6-speed AT PowerShift, but as of now Ford India has not announced a recall in our country.
As a goodwill gesture Ford Australia is offering extended warranty on the Ford EcoSport from 3 years/1,00,000 km to 5 years/1,60,000 km. Moreover, Ford is willing to service the transmission of the affected Ford EcoSports free of charge.
