Hyundai has launched the Venue compact SUV in South Africa from R 309,000 (Rs 15.18 lakh). It is available with a sole 1.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine and comes in four variants. The Venue for the South African market is exported from Hyundai’s Sriperumbudur plant. The carmaker has started development of a left hand drive (LHD) model for the Gulf, Africa and Latin America markets as well.
The South African Venue is similar to the model sold in India. It follows the carmaker’s Sensuous 2.0 design language and comes with design elements like a cascading grille and split headlamp set up. In profile, the Venue’s silhouette resembles the Creta, which is much appreciated, while the 16-inch dual-tone alloy wheels gives it a purposeful stance. At the rear, the Venue’s halogen tail lamps resembles LED units.
Noted features in the Venue include an 8-inch infotainment system, connected car technology, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, climate control, cruise control, a sunroof, a multi-info display (MID), ventilated seats as well as keyless entry with push button start. Safety features include six airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, rear view camera, electronic stability control and hill assist control.
Under the hood, the South African Venue comes with a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine that develops 125PS and 172Nm. Transmission options include a 6-speed manual or 7-speed DCT, same as the India-spec Venue. Closer to home, the Venue can also be had with an 83PS 1.2-litre naturally aspirated (NA) petrol engine and a 90PS 1.4-litre CRDI diesel engine. The NA unit comes with a 5-speed manual only while the diesel engine can be had with either a 6-speed manual.
The Venue has been setting the sales chart on fire since its Indian debut in May 2019. It racked up 75,000 bookings in October 2019 and Hyundai expects to cross the 1,00,000 mark by the end of 2019. Prices for the India-spec Venue start from Rs 6.50 lakh and goes up to Rs 11.11 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
Primary rivals for the Hyundai Venue in India include the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Ford EcoSport, Tata Nexon and the Mahindra XUV300. Kia, Hyundai’s sister company, has started work on a compact SUV based on the Venue as well.
