Making the world a cleaner and safer place to live in isn’t an overnight miracle, but is only possible through a united effort by numerous individuals, organizations, and communities whose initiatives and unrelenting efforts come together to create a global impact of sorts.

To mark this year’s World Environment Day celebration on the 5th of June, India’s top City Gas distributor Mahanager Gas Limited (MGL) joined hands with the country’s no.1 automobile manufacturer Maruti Suzuki Limited to give the city of Mumbai a breath of fresh air.

By replacing its entire fleet of staff vehicles with CNG fitted versions of Maruti’s SX4 sedan and WagonR models, Mahanagar Gas Limited took an important first step in setting an example to lakhs of other Mumbaikars, whose conventional gasoline powered private vehicles continue to pollute the city skies.

The induction of MGL’s new fleet of CNG vehicles was formally done at the hands of Mr. V.C.Chittoda, Managing Director, MGL, in presence of Mr. S.N.Burman, General Manager and Commercial Business Head, Maruti Suzuki, Mr. Allan Perrin, Technical Director MGL, and other senior officials of MGL and Maruti Suzuki.

Delighted at the successful outcome of the company’s green initiative for the city of Mumbai, Mr. V.C. Chittoda, Managing Director, MGL said, “Today, it gives me immense pleasure and pride that country’s leading automobile manufacturer Maruti Suzuki Ltd., has shared our vision of making Mumbai into a much more eco-friendly city to live in.”

With over 2 lakh CNG vehicles that include taxis, rickshaws and a majority of BEST buses in and around Mumbai, MGL’s natural gas supply now spans a network of 150 CNG filling stations having about 750 dispensing points.

It has helped to reduce Mumbai’s vehicular emissions by about 1000 tonnes per day, thus making a significant improvement in city’s environment. MGL’s initiative on the eve of World Environment Day is a small step towards achieving its vision of a pollution free environment.
