Here’s All About Maharashtra’s New Electric Vehicle Policy

After the Delhi and the Gujarat governments rolled out their electric vehicle policies, the Maharashtra state government has also joined the fray too, unveiling its EV policy for 2021, with the aim to accelerate EV adoption in the state. Here’s five things to know about this EV policy: 

Incentives 

Under this policy, four-wheeler buyers can avail a subsidy of Rs 5,000 per kWh of the EV’s battery capacity, with a maximum cap of 30kWh, which equates to Rs 1.5 lakh. To further sweeten the deal, those who have bought EVs before December 31, 2021 will be eligible for an additional early-bird incentive of upto Rs 1 lakh. Add on the vehicle scrappage policy benefits worth Rs 25,000, and the total incentives amount to Rs 2.75 lakh.  These incentives will be offered directly to potential buyers via the dealership. Even public charging stations will receive incentives, with slow chargers getting Rs 10,000 per unit, and upto Rs 5 lakh for moderate or fast charging stations.

Other Benefits

Aside from the above incentives, EVs under this policy will be exempted from road tax and registration fees. There will also be property tax rebates for those installing private charging infrastructure within society premises.

The state government has set a variety of targets under this EV policy, which include 10 percent of new vehicle sales to be EVs, and 25 percent of its public transport and last-mile delivery vehicles to be electrified by 2025. It also aims to convert 15 percent of the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation’s existing bus fleet to electric, with all new government vehicles to be an electric model from April 2022. 

Charging Infrastructure 

The state government plans on installing 2375 public and semi-public charging stations in seven major urban areas and four national highways.

Eligible EVs

While only the Tata Nexon EV is currently eligible for benefits under this policy, there are upcoming models that can join this list. Mahindra‘s all-electric KUV100 is set to go on sale for private buyers soon, with Maruti Suzuki working on an all-electric WagonR, but there’s no launch timeline for that as yet.
