The Mahindra & Mahindra Group is a US $ 12.5 billion Multinational company that operates in many diverse industries such as automobiles, two wheelers, information technology, agribusiness, real estate, defence, retail, steel and the list goes on. It’s a shame that here in the homeland of the company most people know the company only for its cars and tractors. Mahindra made quite a name for themselves with the Scorpio which was the first true Indian SUV. The Scorpio went onto become a bestseller in the market. Recently, the launch of its two wheelers made some noise in the market, but already they have sort of mingled and disappeared into the market. Hardly anyone seems to know about a totally cool field Mahindra Group operates in, aerospace.
Mahindra Aerospace Private Limited (MAPL) was formed in 2008. It was aimed at launching the Mahindra Group skywards by starting a manufacturing unit in aerospace and utility aircraft industry. Recently Mahindra Aeronautics Private Limited has acquired Aerostaff Australia and Gippsland Aeronautics in Australia. Early this year Mahindra Aerospace and Mahindra Satyam (the information technology division of the Mahindra Group) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Eurocopter group. Eurocopter is an aeronautics company that manufactures civilian helicopters as well as combat helicopters for Air forces all over the world.
The partnership with Eurocopter will be for the production and development of civilian helicopters and joint development of market specific products such as single engined and twin engined fixed wing aircrafts will be taken up. At this point it would be worth mentioning that Mahindra Satyam has prior IT experience in the aerospace industry as they have been providing IT solutions for the Airbus for several years now.
Eurocopter demonstrated its commitment to the Indian market by starting Eurocopter India Private Limited in October 2010. In doing so Eurocopter has become the first and only foreign helicopter manufacturer to have a dedicated Indian subsidiary. Eurocopter’s motive behind setting up an Indian subsidiary is to identify synergies and opportunities to strengthen its market in the Indian helicopter Industry.
The Chairman of Mahindra Aerospace and President and Member of the Group Executive Board of Mahindra & Mahindra, Mr. Hemant Luthra commented on the partnership with Eurocopter by saying, “We are delighted to work with the world’s leading helicopter manufacturer to contribute to the growth of the Indian aeronautical industry and civil aircraft market. Eurocopter has a solid, long term strategy for the growth of the India market, while we are already creating a niche for ourselves in the fixed-wing aircraft and aerostructures manufacturing space. We see this MOU as a significant step forward for both of us as well as the domestic aviation industry.”
Mahindra Aerospace Private Limited (MAPL) has invested in excess of US $ 100 Million in both aircraft and aerospace portfolios. MAPL has started developing a major aero structures manufacturing facility in India.
