Mahindra is readying its flagship SUV for launch this festive season. Today, the manufacturer has confirmed not one but two key things about its upcoming SUV.
First, and the most important bit: the luxury SUV will be called ‘Alturas’. This, Mahindra says, refers to ‘height’ or ‘pinnacle’, which the brand believes suits their high-flying to-be customers. Second, the homegrown automaker has also confirmed that prices for the SUV will be announced on November 24.
That said, pre-launch bookings are underway at Mahindra dealerships beginning today. If you need a hint of the pricing before you cut a cheque, the manufacturer says that the Alturas G4 will compete against ‘high-end’ SUVs that cost over Rs 30 lakh (ex-showroom).
The Alturas G4 is nothing more than a rebadged Ssangyong Rexton G4. We had the chance to take a closer look at the SUV earlier this year at the Auto Expo, and we have to say, we were impressed with what we saw. The interiors felt plush and the design managed to mix sophistication with power quite well. Other than a Mahindra grille on the nose, we don’t expect the SUV to be any different compared to the global-spec car. This means you can expect loads of kit including projector headlamps, 18-inch alloy wheels, a sunroof, dual-zone climate control, powered driver seat and a whole lot more.
On the engine front, the Alturas is expected to be powered by a 2.2-litre diesel motor that develops 180PS of power and 420Nm of torque. This motor will be paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission. Notably, a manual variant is unlikely to be on offer.
Considering the specs and features, Mahindra’s Alturas G4 seems to be the perfect rival for the Honda CR-V and Skoda Kodiaq. Naturally, it will also face heat from the more utilitarian big SUVs in the market such as the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour.
