Be it the iconic Thar or the legendary Scorpio, Mahindra has long dominated the Indian automotive industry with its range of SUVs. Now, the brand known for making highly desirable and capable SUVs is gearing up to take things a step further with the launch of its new electric origin SUVs, the BE 6e and XEV 9e. These two brand spanking new eSUVs are set to make their debut on 26 November 2024, during a special event in Chennai, themed Unlimit India.
For the first time, Mahindra will introduce two premium electric origin SUVs simultaneously on the same day. The brand believes that the BE 6e and XEV 9e will not only redefine the segment but also be a game-changer, marking a pivotal moment in the Indian electric vehicle (EV) market.
The upcoming BE 6e and XEV 9e are built on an all-new INGLO platform – a dedicated electric vehicle architecture. Unlike conventional Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) platforms that many EVs adapted from, this new eSUV-specific platform addresses several key issues and opens up a wide range of possibilities. The drawbacks of using an ICE platform modified to make EVs has limitations due to provisions made for various components, such as transmission tunnel. This leads to inefficient packaging of internal space, and the EV ends up with plenty of compromises.
Mahindra has stated that the ‘Electric Origin’ philosophy has allowed INGLO to be one of the lightest flat-floor skateboard architectures. This not only improves seating flexibility but also eliminates central tunnel. Additionally, the platform’s low centre of gravity, achieved by placing the battery into the underbody, offers greater stability and handling. Above all, the INGLO is constructed using ultra-high strength steel and reinforced frontal structure, ensuring safety of passengers.
The INGLO platform, on the other hand, allows for a more generous boot space as well as front trunk (frunk) as the batteries are neatly tucked under the floor, and is versatile enough to accommodate both a single-motor and dual-motor configurations, with rear-wheel drive setup generating output ranging from 231 PS to 285 PS.
This is also a flexible architecture, enabling Mahindra to develop electric vehicles across different segments or body styles in the future. Plus, it can house batteries ranging from 59kWh to 79kWh, which have not been seen before in any mass market EV in India. Speaking of which, the BE 6e and XEV 9e will likely be equipped with the LFP (Lithium Ion Phosphate) battery technology, known for its longevity, safety, and stability. Not only that, the INGLO supports up to 175DC fast charging, which can charge the battery from 20 to 80 percent in 20 minutes.
A recently revealed teaser of the new Mahindra BE 6e and XEV 9e showcases their futuristic, sci-fi movie-inspired design language, which, most notably, retains some styling cues from the concept models. While the exterior bears a never-seen-before look, the interior complements it with its unique layout. The BE 6e and XEV 9e is likely to feature a state-of-the-art three screen setup – a feature available only with high-end luxury vehicles. Moreover, the high-tech system could bring 5G connectivity, connected car tech, and telematics.
The INGLO also opens up new possibilities for integration of technology into the Mahindra’s upcoming eSUVs, such as brake-by-wire, high-power steering wheel, and semi-active suspension – another feature mainly used in high-end luxury and performance cars. The brake-by-wire system electronically controls the braking process. Whereas, semi-active suspension adjusts the shock absorbers’ damping force in real-time based on the inputs from sensors that actively monitor changing road conditions.
Safety and features have been top priorities for Mahindra and the upcoming BE 6e and XEV 9e would not disappoint. These electric origin SUVs are expected to boast Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), a 360-degree camera, and multiple airbags for enhanced safety. In addition, a unique in-cabin audio suite, featuring sounds composed by none other than A. R. Rahman may be available. To top it off, the BE 6e and XEV 9e will include all advanced features found in the popular Mahindra XUV 700, making them a true leap forward in terms of new-age mobility.
With the launch of the all-new BE 6e and XEV 9e on November 26, Mahindra is poised to bring a revolution in the Indian EV automotive space. The electric origin SUVs promise to deliver a unique design, ultra-modern interiors, cutting-edge technology, and class-leading performance.
