Mahindra and Mahindra has launched the e-Verito electric sedan in the country, priced at Rs 9.50 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) for the base D2 trim. The e-Verito is the fully-electric sibling of the Verito sedan and has been a long time coming for the home-grown carmaker. It was first showcased at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo, but this final consumer-ready version has changed quite a bit since then, thanks to inputs from Mahindra’s electric subsidiary, Reva.

Motive power on the e-Verito comes from a 72V electric motor which produces the equivalent of 41PS of power and peak torque figure of 91Nm, available instantaneously right from the get-go thanks to the characteristics of electric motors. Mahindra promises a top speed of 86kmph for the e-Verito.

Fully charged, the e-Verito will reportedly travel 110 kilometres before needing a juice-up. The full charging time is a hefty eight hours, which is the biggest drawback of electric vehicles compared to their conventional counterparts. Hence, people who drive more than 100 kilometres daily might find it difficult living with the e-Verito on a daily basis, compounded by the lack of public charging stations even in the country’s metros.

With that in mind, Mahindra is providing a faster charging mode for the top-end D6 trim (Rs 10 lakh) of the e-Verito which brings the charging time down to six and a half hours. Other than these two, there is also the mid-trim D4, priced at Rs 9.75 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).

Aesthetically, the e-Verito remains the same as its fossil fuel-powered sibling on the exterior, save for the minor nips and tucks on the front and the badgings at the rear. The interiors, on the other hand, see a considerable amount of change. To cope with the drag that normal tyres produce, Mahindra has fitted the e-Verito with low rolling-resistance tyres.

The Mahindra e-Verito is available for bookings at Mahindra dealerships in Delhi starting today, with rollout in the rest of the country to follow soon. Although its maker obviously don’t see it as a volume earner, it will nonetheless benefit from the government schemes available on electric cars and position Mahindra as a forward-thinking company. The company already has plans for a hybrid Verito, but exports aren't a priority right now.
