It took a long time to come but the wraps are now finally off the Mahindra Quanto, and if pricing is anything to go by, the new MUV is set to squash some of the large hatchbacks currently ruling the roost in the great Indian car bazaar.
Priced between Rs 5.82 lakh for the base variant and Rs 7.36 lakh (ex-showroom, Mumbai) for the top-end variant, the Quanto is definitely a worthwhile alternative to those considering large premium diesel hatchbacks or for that matter even entry-level diesel sedans.
Referred to as the mini-Xylo for a long time until Mahindra finally christened it Quanto a few weeks ago, the new sub 4-metre MUV is based on the Ingenio platform, the third vehicle after the Xylo and Genio. The name Quanto is derived from the word ‘Quantum’ in reference to the mini MUV that offers more power, space etc compared to an average road car. Related: Mahindra Quanto First Drive

The Quanto is powered by an all new three-cylinder, 1.5-litre engine badged the mCR100 (claimed by Mahindra to be the world’s smallest twin turbo engine) that develops 100bhp at 3750rpm and 240Nm of torque in the 1600-2800rpm band. The shift to a three pot unit is mainly to reduce emissions and improve fuel efficiency says Mahindra. The five-speed transmission is the same as in the Xylo though tweaked slightly to suit the Quanto’s characteristics.
The Quanto is available in four variants: C2, C4, C6 and C8 and six colour options: Fiery Black, Java Brown, Mist Silver, Toreador Red, Rocky Beige & Diamond White with the Toreador Red being the pick of the lot. Air conditioner, power and tilt steering and mobile charger are standard on all variants while safety features such as ABS, front and passenger airbags and reverse park assist are exclusive to the top-of-the-line C8 features. Other accessories on the C8 include roof rails, alloys, body coloured bumpers, handles and side panels, electric ORVM, side and rear foot steps.
Live the weekend life – that’s the tagline of the new Quanto and the mantra Mahindra wants potential customers – young, successful people – to live by. Does the Quanto manage to live up to its tagline, we’ll find out after a Road Test but initial impressions do look promising – the Quanto is a great product overall with space good enough to swallow a hatchback according to Mahindra, stellar ride quality and price that’s just right for those seeking a budget MUV.

C4: Rs 6.35 lakh
