  • Sub-4m Mahindra S201 is likely to pack a hefty feature list, including dual-zone climate control and a touchscreen infotainment display
  • Likely to launch in August 2019, the S201 is based on the Ssangyong Tivoli
  • Will rival the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza, Ford EcoSport and the upcoming Hyundai QXi

Mahindra is readying yet another rival to the Maruti Suzuki Vitara Brezza in the form of a compact SUV codenamed the S201. This will be Mahindra's fourth sub-4 metre SUV in the market but will be more premium than the current lot consisting of the Bolero Power+, NuvoSport and the TUV300. Further, the upcoming SUV will be Mahindra's second rebadged SUV from Ssangyong after the recently-launched Altrus G4 as the S201 is based on the Korean carmaker’s Tivoli. The S201 is expected to launch in August next year with a price tag of Rs 8 lakh to Rs 12 lakh (ex-showroom).

Now that you know the background, here's how the Mahindra is planning to dent the sales of the Vitara Brezza. Look closely at the picture and you will see a long list of features. Just like the Tivoli, the S201 also gets a touchscreen infotainment system, dual-zone climate control, auto-dimming IRVM, and steering-mounted controls. It is also likely to pack a semi-digital instrument cluster like the one seen on the global-spec Tivoli.

But it's not just the features that look appealing. The S201 that was spied testing recently also gave us a glimpse of the leather upholstery, leather-wrapped steering wheel, a dual-tone dashboard, dual-tone steering wheel, various storage spaces on the dashboard and bottle holders on the front doors.

The Mahindra S201 is expected to be powered by the Marazzo's 1.5-litre diesel engine, albeit with a lower tune. A new 1.2-litre petrol engine is also expected to be a part of the lineup, but that will happen later in the life cycle. This will be the same petrol engine which the company intends to supply to Ford. Mahindra is also planning to launch an S201-based EV soon after launching the all-electric KUV100. Expect the all-electric S201 to arrive sometime in 2020.
