Once the lone steed in the Indian entry-level SUV segment, the Mahindra Scorpio is now facing stiff competition from more modern rivals such as the Renault Duster and the Ford EcoSport. To refresh the market's interest in the Scorpio, Mahindra has introduced a special edition variant that is limited to 500 units.
The Scorpio special edition features cosmetic enhancements to spruce up the SUV’s appeal with dual tone leather seats, leather shod steering wheel and gear lever, high-gloss wood trim on the dashboard and centre console, chrome finished alloy wheels, chequered flag decals on the exterior as well as added equipment such as a roof mounted DVD player with a 9-inch screen and dual front airbags.
The Mahindra Scorpio special edition will be available in the top-of-the-line VLX trim of the 4x2 model that retails at Rs 11.02 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) though expect the special edition variant to be priced slightly higher as Mahindra is yet to announce its price. The Scorpio VLX is also equipped with a lengthy equipment list featuring power windows, power steering, electric ORVMs, a Bluetooth equipped double-DIN stereo with steering-mounted controls, ABS, cruise control, rear parking sensors, automatic headlights and wipers, tyre pressure monitor, etc.
The special edition Mahindra Scorpio is powered by the 2.2 litre turbo diesel engine that develops 120PS of power and 290Nm of torque and is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox.
The Mahindra Scorpio is 11 years old now and over the years it has gathered a significant fan following from across the nation. Its Facebook page alone has 24,92,745 likes. In its lifespan, the Scorpio has featured a number of updates and facelifts to keep up with the times. Word is out that another face-lift of the Scorpio has been slated for launch in 2014.
