The all-new Thar sure does grab eyeballs. Here’s a closer look at its exterior design

Mahindra has taken the wraps off the 2020 Thar and we must admit it’s been well worth the wait as it looks stunning. The design is eye grabbing and we’re pretty sure the new Thar will be capable of making many heads turn. It’s offered in three variants: AX, AX Opt, LX, and all three of them can be had in unique body styles. But you’ll have to wait a bit longer to get a good view of the new Thar as it will only reach showrooms on October 2. But if you’re itching to get a closer look at the SUV, we’ve got you covered.

Before we start, have a long stare at the Thar. What do you think about its design? Let us know in the comments section below.

The front end retains the traditional seven-slat grille, albeit with some alterations. The grille is finished in plastic unlike the older car which came with a metal finish. The round headlamps continue to utilise halogen bulbs, which is a bit of a bummer considering most cars in this price range have shifted to LEDs.

The bumper looks tough and adds to the Thar’s butch design. It also features a pair of fog lamps, which is a first for the Thar. The bash plate also looks like it could take quite a beating. It also ensures that all critical mechanical components are protected.

The DRLs and turn indicators are mounted on the front wheel arches, while the indicators on the side profile of the fenders stay on all the time and are called marker lamps.

The Thar’s profile looks similar to the previous-gen model and that’s no bad thing. However, the larger dimensions means it could grab more eyeballs now thanks to a squatter stance. It’s 65mm longer at 3985mm, 129mm wider at 1855mm and 86mm shorter at 1844mm. That said, the wheelbase has also grown by 20mm at 2450mm.

Everything in the 2020 Thar is XXL when compared to its predecessor. This includes the flared wheel arches as well as the 18-inch 5-spoke alloy wheels that come as standard on the LX variant pictured here. The AX trim gets 16-inch steel wheels finished in white. Nice!

These are not your regular front doors. You can remove them to convert the Thar into a proper off-road SUV.

Mahindra wants to let everyone know that you’re driving something special. So the SUV gets ‘Thar’ badging on the front bumper and fenders, ORVMs, alloy wheels and in the tail lamps as well.

The Thar is offered in three body styles: fixed soft top, manual convertible soft top and hard top. The AX variant is offered with a fixed soft top, while the other two body styles can be had with either the AX Opt or the top-spec LX variants. Seen here is the Thar LX with a hard top.

But if you want your Thar to stand out, we suggest you pick up the manual convertible soft top variant. Looks sexy, doesn’t it? You tell us in the comments section below.

Moving on to the rear, the Thar features LED tail lamps along with the ‘Thar’ name engraved in it. Good attention to detail.

The rear windscreen on the hard top variant features a demister and the best part is that it can be lifted up to access the boot. Clearly, Mahindra has gone all-out with the new Thar. In typical SUV fashion, it gets a full-sized spare wheel mounted on the tailgate.

The Thar will be offered with six colour options: Red Rage, Mystic Copper, Napoli Black, Aquamarine, Galaxy Grey and Rocky Beige. Click here to know more about the 2020 Mahindra Thar. The latest SUV from Mahindra is set to reach showrooms on October 2 and we expect prices to start from around the Rs 10 lakh mark (ex-showroom). It will lock horns with the upcoming Force Gurkha and Maruti Suzuki Jimny
