The Thar can be had in three body styles right from the factory floor: a fixed soft top, a cabriolet or convertible soft top and a fixed hard top. While the AX variant can be had with a fixed soft top only, the other two variants can be had with either a hard top or a convertible roof. Mind you, this ain’t a Porsche 911 and you need to do the work of dropping down the roof.
The Thar also looks very appealing, courtesy its Jeep Wrangler-esque design philosophy aiide from the different front grille. Even the interior is a huge step up from the previous-gen Thar. It’s also IP54 dust and water resistant, allowing you to clean it after a mudding session thanks to a drain plug in the floor area. Mind you, only the floor well is washable.
Mahindra has also ensured that the new-gen Thar comes loaded with all the essentials you would need. Notable equipment includes a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment which features off-road stats, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, cruise control, roof mounted speakers, electronic air conditioner, steering mounted audio controls, a multi-info display, power windows and keyless entry. Safety is covered by dual airbags, ABS with EBD, rear parking sensors, electronic stability control and a roll cage.
The second-gen Thar is offered with two new engine options: a 2.0-litre petrol engine and a 2.2-litre diesel motor. The petrol engine puts out 150PS and 300Nm (320Nm in AT) while the diesel unit churns out 130PS and 300Nm. For the first time, the Thar is offered with a 6-speed automatic transmission, which will be sold alongside the new 6-speed manual transmission.
Naturally, the Thar being an off-roader, it comes with a 4X4 drivetrain. You also get a low-range transfer case for tackling tricky terrain and that’s not it. Mahindra also offers the Thar with a mechanical differential for the rear axle and a brake locking diff as well. But the AX standard variant is the only one that doesn’t get the mechanically locking differential at the rear axle which distributes power to the wheel with the most traction in slippery conditions.
Clearly, Mahindra has ensured that all boxes are checked in the new-gen Thar. It currently doesn’t have any rivals and will fight it out with the upcoming Maruti Suzuki Jimny and Force Gurkha.
