Mahindra has voluntarily recalled 1,577 units of the Thar diesel over a possible issue with the camshaft. The manufacturer will be contacting owners for inspection, after which the part will be replaced free of cost if necessary. The authorised service centre could keep the car for thorough inspection for a couple of days at best.
The camshafts in question were produced between September 7 and December 25, 2020. Head of Mahindra Customer Care Sanjoy Gupta spoke exclusively to our sister channel, CarDekho, and said that “the camshafts were not machined as per specification due to an error from the supplier.”
A camshaft is a rotating object that runs the fuel pump. Irregularities in fuel pressure could arise if the camshaft isn’t as per the required specifications.
Mahindra has also recalled select batches of the Thar to adjust the four-wheel drive shift cable as owners complained of a rattling sound. This issue will also be checked and rectified, free of charge. The manufacturer has rolled out a software update for both petrol and diesel variants against select vehicle identification numbers (VIN).
A recall of a brand new vehicle can be frustrating, but it’s good to see Mahindra taking this step so that owners don’t face any issue. This ensures the vehicle withstands the test of time.

The Thar is currently priced from Rs 12.10 lakh to Rs 14.15 lakh (ex-showroom). It commands a waiting period of up to eight months.
