Your Wait For A Mahindra Thar Might Extend To 2022

• Automatic variants have the longest waiting period, whereas the convertible and hard-top petrol-manual variants see the shortest waiting time.

Ever since Mahindra launched the second-gen Thar in October 2020, it’s been a popular offering among the masses. Unfortunately, this demand has led to long waiting periods, and it seems like it is not getting better anytime soon. After five months of being on sale, incurring two price hikes, seeing the discontinuation of the base-spec AX variant and a major manufacturing recall, the waiting period for the new Thar is up to 10 months. That means we might get the Thar only by early-2022.

The automatic Thar variants carry the highest waiting period, whereas, the convertible and hard-top petrol-manual trims have the shortest waiting time. Yes, the demand for the Thar is pretty high, but there’s another factor behind these delays: the global shortage of semiconductors which are important for a car’s electronics. As a result, Thars are sitting at dealerships without the 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system so deliveries are being halted until the displays arrive and are fitted onto the off-roader. 

Currently, the Thar is offered only in the AX Opt and LX variants in convertible soft-top and hardtop options. The AX and AX STD variants, which came with a fixed soft-top roof and side-facing seats, were discontinued a while back. The Thar is powered by a 150PS 2.0-litre turbo-petrol and a 130PS 2.2-litre diesel unit. Both engines get a 4x4 drivetrain as standard, paired with either a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. 

The second-gen Mahindra Thar is priced from Rs 12.10 lakh to Rs 14.15 lakh (ex-showroom). While it doesn’t have any rivals in India at the moment, it will soon face competition from the upcoming Maruti Suzuki Jimny and the next-gen Force Gurkha.
