Mahindra has officially announced that they will offer petrol engines in all their SUVs in the next few years. The petrol engines will be made parallel to their diesel counterparts and will be available in a variety of displacements. The petrol engines will be made in collaboration with SsangYong which is under the control of Mahindra.

As of now, there will be three engines on offer in the petrol range. The smallest will be a 1.2-litre motor that will be in accordance to the sub 4-meter excise benefits rule. Expect this to be available in the newly launched TUV300 and the Quanto and also in the other smaller SUV that Mahindra is planning to launch soon.

The other engines will be a 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre motor that will be available on the likes of the Mahindra Scorpio and the XUV500. The 1.6-litre engine will be the same engine that has just been introduced on the SsangYong Tivoli in the European market. The top of the line 2.0-litre engine will possibly only be seen in the Mahindra XUV500 and will probably be turbocharged to provide more power.

Although Mahindra has predominantly been a diesel manufacturer and has only dabbled in petrol engines once in 2003 when the Scorpio was first launched, there certainly is a section of the Indian SUV buying audience who might not mind a petrol powered car. That said, we still expect the majority of Mahindra’s buyers to still opt for the tried and tested diesel engines.
